Arlo's mom here...I need some advice. Do any of your pugs like to run away? I see all of these wonderful pictures of all of your adorable pugs playing and having fun
off-leash! How can I get Arlo to do that? How do I get him to stay close to the house? How do I get him to come when called? Will he settle down when he gets older? Am I just being a worry pants? Any and all advice will be appreciated!

We don't let Sequoia off leash (she is ony 3yrs) she would explore too far and we have a 50/50chance she will come when called. She is only off leash at the enclosed dog park. I am sure with a lot of training (which we have't done) you could get him to behave. Good luck to you and Arlo.
Hi Arlo's mom!
We agree with Sequoia and Tuni's mom (above) on the training aspect, but also think age has something to do with it. Salinger used to be a lot "crazier" when he was a baby and now that he's gotten to be older, lazier and more of a Velcro Pug, I'll let him off leash once in a while in an open area where there are NO other dogs or people around. Once in a while he'll run crazy, but he usually comes looking for me as soon as he realizes he has his freedom!
Good luck and hang in there!

Hi Arlo's Mom,
I have 3 puggies. None are off leash unless in an enclosed area. Just not worth the risk to me.
Pugs may settle down some when they age. I have all of mine trained for some commands, one is a therapy dog and listens real well. Some tricks too!
Hi Arlos moms
My moms never let me off the leash. I would be gone, gone, gone.
I don't blame them for not trusting me. I think EVERYTHING is a game, and I can get hurt. One time I jumped out of the car at Home Depot- MISTAKE! I took off!
My moms agree it is not worth it the risk. I have a fenced yard- then sometimes I can be off the leash, but an eagle could come get me and take me away- so i am watched all the time. I am 3 and a half years old. Still like a puppy

I must be one of the pugs you've seen because I am only on-leash when we're walking in the city. The rest of the time I am free free FREE!
You & your human should start practicing now, before you have time to develop your 'selective hearing' skills.
It's really easy to learn, just tell your mom to give you a treat and a lots of pets every time she calls you. She should make it easy for you at first - like in the living room. Once you've mastered small spaces with few distractions, move it outdoors. Start small and fenced (or on a long leash) and work up from there. You can do it!
Even if you never roam free, my human says it's really important to know how to come when called. If you ever got loose by mistake, she'd need a way to get you back before something bad happened.
